The 5th annual Samui Open Beach Volleyball Tournament was announced for March 10 to March 12, 2023, on Koh Samui. The venue was the Royal Muang Samui Villas on Choeng Mon Beach.

Organised by Biggs Island Productions, the event was established in 2016 to cater to the growing global interest in beach volleyball and to contribute to the sports tourism sector in Thailand.

Players From 28 Countries

According to the organisers, the 2023 tournament attracted 120 athletes and 80 teams from 28 countries. Around 80% of the participants came from overseas, with the remaining 20% being Thai and foreign nationals.

In addition to the tournament, a 3-day training camp was to be run by HUB Beach Volleyball Camp from Australia.

The Samui Open was described as the largest event of its kind yet. It was supported by the Tourism Association of Koh Samui (TAKS) and Koh Samui Municipality (Tessaban).

Divisions, Schedule and Prizes

The competition featured four divisions:

• Men's 2×2
• Women's 2×2
• Mix 2×2
• Quads 4×4

Play was spread over three days, ending with the awarding of titles, prizes, trophies, medals, sponsor vouchers, volleyball gear and apparel to the winners.

Matches were scheduled from 9 am to 6 pm daily, with the semi-finals and finals on Sunday, March 12, starting at 1 pm.

Free Entry for Spectators

Spectators were welcome to attend free of charge and enjoy live DJs, concession stands and volleyball merchandise. After the tournament, an "Appreciation" party was planned at Pure Beach Club, with a live band, fireworks, and food and drink specials.

Tournament Director and Organizer Cord Biggs expressed gratitude for the local supporters and pride in bringing world-class beach volleyball to Koh Samui, stating: "We are proud to promote beach volleyball in South East Asia and on Koh Samui and to hold this annual event on our beautiful island."

Events like this are one of many things to do in Koh Samui throughout the year.
