Full Moon Party Draws Its Biggest Crowd Since Covid

In early February 2023, the Full Moon Party in Haad Rin, Koh Pha Ngan, returned to its pre-Covid numbers, attracting a massive crowd of tourists from around the world. The event, known for its wild celebrations, drew an estimated 20,000 to 50,000 people.

Accommodation on the island, including hotels and hostels, was almost fully booked, reaching 99% capacity. The pier and the boats were overwhelmed with partygoers making their way to the island.

A Long Night, but an Earlier Finish

The party lasted until around 6 am, a few hours earlier than the original 8 am finish time, although afterparties continued until 7 am. Many attendees spent several days without sleep, enjoying non-stop parties in the days leading up to the Full Moon Party.

A Peaceful and Safe Event

Authorities reported a relatively peaceful and safe event, with no major serious incidents. Various government and law enforcement agencies were present to ensure safety, including Haad Rin Police, Koh Pha Ngan Police Station, Immigration Police, Tourist Police and marine police.

Speedboats operating throughout the night were monitored for safety. Operators were instructed to enforce the use of life jackets and to avoid overcrowding.

Strong Revenue and a Date Change in March

The large crowd created a festive atmosphere on the island and generated significant revenue. Bars and bucket stalls were busy serving cocktails, while restaurants earned substantial amounts from late-night snacks bought by intoxicated tourists. Accommodation was nearly sold out, and last-minute bookings were much more expensive than in previous years.

The following month, the Full Moon Party clashed with the Buddhist holiday of Makha Bucha Day. Because the sale and consumption of alcohol are prohibited on this holy day, the party was moved to the following day, March 7, while Jungle Experience, a pre-party event, was set to begin at 12:01 am on the 7th.
