Speedboat Catches Fire and Sinks off Koh Samui

In early February 2023, a speedboat caught fire and subsequently sank off the coast of Koh Samui, Thailand, near the Bang Rak boat pier in tambon Bo Phut, Koh Samui district. The incident occurred around midnight, and the emergency response team reacted promptly.

The Silver Star Fire

The speedboat, named the Silver Star and operated by the tour boat company Siam Experience, was completely engulfed in flames before the fire was extinguished. However, the boat had suffered significant damage and eventually sank. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

At the time of the report, the cause of the fire was being investigated and authorities were assessing the extent of the damage. The fire did not spread to the other boats moored nearby.

Earlier Boat Fires in Thailand

This was not an isolated occurrence, as there had been previous boat fires in Thailand:

• On December 11, a tour boat in Phuket caught fire while moored at a pier, causing damage but no injuries or fatalities.
• On April 23, a massive onboard fire destroyed and sank a luxury catamaran named the "Jimmy Blue" at the Yacht Haven Marina in Phuket. Electrical short-circuiting was suspected as the cause of that fire.

Investigations into such incidents help authorities identify the causes and take appropriate measures to ensure safety and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Boat trips remain among the most popular things to do in Koh Samui.
