Thailand has recently eased the ban on recreationalcannabis, leading to the emergence of cannabis cafes and weed dispensariesthroughout the country. However, the government's amendments to the laws andongoing debates about the permissible use of cannabis have created a somewhatconfusing situation, often referred to as the "weed Wild West," whichcould potentially cause issues for tourists. Many people, including cannabisadvocate Kitty Chopaka, have expressed uncertainty about the accuracy ofavailable information since the legalization of cannabis.

 

To provide clarity, the Ministry of Public Health haspublished a new guide, reassuring tourists that as long as they adhere to a fewsimple rules, there is nothing to fear. Mendel Menachem from the cannabisinformation hub High Thailand emphasizes the importance of following theseguidelines.

 

Here is what tourists need to know about consuming cannabisin Thailand:

 

Who can consume cannabis?

 

Cannabis consumption is legal for individuals over the ageof 20 who are not pregnant or breastfeeding.

Where can you consume it?

 

Smoking cannabis is allowed inside an individual'sresidence, and consuming cannabis-infused food is permitted at licensedrestaurants.

Smoking marijuana in public places such as schools, temples,and shopping malls can result in a 25,000 baht ($750) fine and a three-monthprison sentence. It is important to be mindful of not encroaching on otherpeople's space.

Where can you buy it?

 

There are over 5,000 weed stores across the country thatsell various cannabis products, including cannabis flowers, pre-rolled joints,edibles with a THC level below 0.2%, infused foods, and CBD oil.

It is advisable to purchase from reputable and licensedestablishments.

Can you grow it?

 

To cultivate cannabis, individuals must register with thecountry's Food and Drug Administration.

A permit is required for using cannabis flower buds forresearch, export, or commercial purposes.

How much can you consume?

 

There is no specific limit for personal consumption;however, the ministry's guide advises against driving after consuming cannabis.

What remains prohibited?

 

Tourists are not allowed to enter or leave the country withany part of the cannabis plant or its seeds.

Possession of extracts with a THC level higher than 0.2%requires permission that tourists are unlikely to have.

Menachem emphasizes that people who live in koh samui andresponsibly use cannabis hope that visitors will respect the country and itspeople by engaging in responsible consumption practices.
