Samui Airport: Ride Apps Face Pickup Problems

Reports say app drivers cannot pick up inside Samui airport, so some visitors walk more than a kilometre to meet their ride.

Visitors who try to use a ride app at Samui airport may be surprised. Two reports published on 31 May 2026 describe tourists walking out of the airport with their luggage, in the heat, to meet drivers who cannot come to the terminal. The reports are based on accounts from residents and long-term visitors. They are not an official statement from the airport.

What the reports say

Pattaya Mail writes that drivers who work with apps such as Grab are said to be kept away from pickup points at the airport, at ferry piers and at some hotels, because of pressure from local transport operators. As a result, passengers reportedly walk more than one kilometre outside the airport grounds to find their car.

Travel And Tour World gives a similar picture. It names Grab, Bolt and InDrive, and puts the walk at about 1.5 kilometres. According to this report, the pickup zones at the terminal are reserved for authorised airport limousines and for shuttles booked in advance. It adds that temperatures at that time of year were between 35 and 38 degrees.

Why it matters

Pattaya Mail points to the lack of a metered taxi system on Koh Samui. It notes that a local taxi ride of less than 10 kilometres typically costs around 400 baht, and that prices are not always clear in advance. Both articles point to a long-running dispute between local taxi groups and app drivers. Similar problems have been reported in Phuket and Pattaya.

The walk is hardest for families with children, older travellers and anyone with heavy bags or limited mobility. The road outside the airport is not designed for people on foot with suitcases.

How to avoid the problem

  • Book your airport transfer before you fly, and get the price in writing.
  • If you take a taxi at the terminal, agree the fare before you get in.
  • If you still want to use an app, read the pickup point carefully before you confirm the ride.
  • Do the same at the ferry piers, where the reports describe the same limits.

What it means for your stay

The reports concern arrival points: the airport, the piers and some hotels. They do not say that ride apps are unavailable on the rest of Koh Samui. A transfer arranged in advance is the calm way to start: the driver waits at arrivals with your name and takes you straight to the door. Ask your accommodation whether it can arrange one. If you rent a car or scooter, you can also have it delivered to the villa. See our villas for rent in Koh Samui and ask about transfers when you enquire.
