Samui Stayed Open During the November 2025 Thai Floods
· Luxy Samui
In the late November 2025 floods in southern Thailand, Samui stayed open while some ferry and speedboat services stopped.
Heavy rain brought serious flooding to parts of southern Thailand in late November 2025. Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao stayed open to visitors, but some boat services were suspended because of strong wind and waves. This is how the situation was described in travel updates published on 27 and 29 November 2025.
What was reported for the islands
An update carried by the Pattaya Mail on 27 November 2025 said that tourism on the three islands continued as normal. Attractions on land were open. Visitors were asked to take the usual care in windy conditions with high waves.
A second update, published on 29 November by the French travel site Toute la Thaïlande, said that most attractions, hotels, night boats, buses and local transport on the islands were running without interruption.
Ferries: some ran, some did not
Both updates gave the same picture for the three main boat companies:
- Seatran Discovery was operating normally.
- Lomprayah's main ferries were running, but speedboat services on some routes were suspended.
- Songserm services were temporarily suspended.
The Pattaya Mail report stressed that the islands could still be reached with the services that were running.
The mainland was hit harder
Some districts of Surat Thani province, on the mainland, reported flooding. Surat Thani airport was working normally, and travellers were advised to allow extra time in heavy rain. Roads were described as largely open with small changes.
Further south, the city of Hat Yai was much more affected. On 29 November its airport was open but some flights were cancelled, and taxi and minibus services there were suspended. The same update said that eight affected provinces had been given an exemption for visa overstays until 31 December 2025.
What it means for your stay
According to Travelers Today, the rainy season on Samui begins in October and November is usually the wettest month. This event shows what that can mean. The island itself often keeps working, while the sea crossing and the mainland roads are the weak points. If you plan a Koh Samui holiday in November or early December, a few choices reduce the risk:
- Fly directly to Samui airport if you can, and avoid a tight ferry connection.
- If you take a boat, choose a large ferry over a speedboat in bad weather.
- Leave a spare day before an international flight home.
- Check your travel insurance for weather delays.
Both updates listed the Tourist Police on 1155 and the TAT contact centre on 1672 for help. Weather differs from year to year, so follow current forecasts before you travel. If your dates are flexible, you can check villa availability for different weeks and compare.
