Cruise Ships Return to Koh Samui: 31 Planned for 2023

Cruise ships were coming back to Koh Samui at the end of 2022. According to the Pattaya Mail, a total of 31 cruise ships were scheduled to visit the island in 2023, and an additional 32 were expected in 2024. Authorities in Surat Thani, the southern Thai province that includes Koh Samui, remained optimistic about the recovering tourism sector as another cruise ship arrived near the island in December 2022.

The Mein Schiff 5 and its 2,500 passengers

The ship in question was the Mein Schiff 5 cruise liner. Koh Samui prepared to welcome nearly 2,500 European travellers for a one-day visit, and the arrival brought joy to Thailand's Prime Minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Because of the Covid-19 pandemic, this vessel was only the second European cruise ship to visit the island in the previous three years.

Government message: protect Thailand's reputation

As the industry gradually rebounded from the impact of the pandemic, the government urged businesses to uphold the country's positive reputation.

Prayut cautioned against any exploitation of tourists. He asked all stakeholders to keep stringent policies in place, so that travellers would not be taken advantage of by taxi drivers and tourism operators. He also reportedly instructed the authorities to impose severe penalties if such practices were discovered, to preserve the country's reputation in the tourism sector.

International arrivals expected above forecasts

The authorities projected that international visitors to Thailand would surpass the projections of the time, as the world gradually returned to normal after the pandemic. During the pandemic, strict virus containment measures around the world had significantly restricted travel.

For Koh Samui, more visitors meant more demand for places to stay, from hotels to private and beachfront villas, which offer a quiet and exclusive stay for travellers looking for a peaceful retreat. Professional villa management helps to make sure that these guests have an easy and enjoyable stay on the island.
