Heavy Rains Halt Koh Samui Ferries in December 2022

In mid-December 2022, heavy rains and severe weather conditions affected southern Thailand and disrupted hotels, short-term villa rentals and holiday services in Koh Samui. The closure of Gulf ferry services halted transportation between the mainland and popular islands such as Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao for two days. The Surin Islands, a national park located in the Andaman Sea, were also temporarily closed to tourists.

Ferries stopped and safety warnings for travellers

During this period, tourists were advised to put their safety first and to follow the warnings issued by the authorities.

Some travellers considered renting a private boat as another way to cross. This was a risky option, because the hazardous conditions at sea included waves of two to four metres.

Weather forecast for the southern provinces

The Thai Meteorological Department issued forecasts of heavy rain, thunderstorms and rising waves in several southern provinces:

• Nakhon Si Thammarat
• Pattani
• Phatthalung
• Songkhla
• Surat Thani
• Trang
• Yala

Why the Surin Islands were closed

The closure of the Surin Islands because of thunderstorms is a regular occurrence during the monsoon season, from May 1 to October 31. It is a precautionary measure taken to keep tourists safe, and it shows the risks that come with heavy rainfall and high waves.
